Why “The Family Car”?

What we love

Room for improvement

Hello!  Welcome to The Family Car – the practical review site to find out if your chosen new car will work for your family.

You won’t find the 0-60 time of your car here, but you will be able to find out if you can get 3 car seats across the back of your car, what the storage is like and will a muddy footy kit fit in the boot?!

What do we consider in a Family Car?

When looking for a new car, you will have a list of requirements, but sometimes, it’s not always easy to match those requirements with the car you are looking at.  Sure, the rear bench looks roomy enough, but only when you try and get a third car seat in, do you discover there isn’t enough room!

So, what are the things you need to take into account when buying a new family car, and how do we check those for you?

Does the boot fit my pram and shopping? We measure the boot size in centimetres, as this is much more relatable than litres!  We also test a large pram in the boot, so you can see how much space you have to play with!
I don’t want my little one being woken up when napping We check if the car has any specific features that will help or even any alerts and if they can be switched off, and if so – how you do it!
I really don’t want to listen to Nursery Rhymes on repeat for another journey! Here we’re looking for the ability to turn the music off/adjust the volume independently for the front and back of the car.  Not only to save your ears, but to also save little one’s if they’re napping and you still want to have the radio on.
I may need to put my children in the front? We check if you can actually transport children in the front, if there are ISOFix points , if you can just the seatbelts to fit a child or their seat, if you can deactivate the airbag, and can you do it safely and easily
For older ones, a tablet for movies and games is often a must have, but can you store it safely? We’re looking for secure places to store a tablet, and any holders that would then allow you to use it safely when on the move.
Can I get the child seats in? The same child seats are fitted for every review, so you can compare easily.  We also check if it’s possible to fit 3 seats across the back.  If the car is a 7 seater, we also check what seats can be used there, and how easy the boot seats are to access.
Is this car safe? We list the EURO NCAP rating, so you can find out how well this car scored on independent vehicle testing.

What makes us the right people to do this?

The Family Car is run by the Child Seat Safety – the Car Seat Ladies, who have worked with parents, carers, road safety professionals and retailers for many, many years, helping them to keep children safe in the car.  Over those years, they have seen thousands of car seats not correctly fitted, and many completely incompatible with the car – they often wished there were a website that dedicated itself to seeking out family friendly cars, and with nothing forthcoming – The Family Car was born!
