Axkid Minikid

What we love

  • The self-adjusting harness:  When you strap little one into this car seat, the headrest automatically comes down to the correct height when you pull the harness tight

  • The self-adjusting tethers: We really like the self-tightening tether straps, as it can prove tricky to know when tethers are tight enough, and this removes both the doubt and the risk of misuse

Room for improvement

  • Padding:  There isn’t a huge amount of padding in the seat, however it does come with a padded baby insert that can be used, but there is no clear direction when or if you need to remove this

ECER44.04 – certified from Birth* to 25kg

*The Axkid Minikid, is certified under ECER44.04 to be used from Birth to 25kg, however Axkid recommend that an infant has a infant carrier initially and then moves into the Minikid once they can sit unaided.

The Minikid has passed the Swedish plus test, and is a rear facing only, belt fit child seat.

It features self tightening tethers, a self adjusting harness, and additional side impact protection – making your life easier, and keeping little one safer.

The seat can be fitted close to the vehicle seat back, giving more room up front for the driver, or further back, with the ‘heels’ of the seat placed on the edge of the vehicle seat.  This gives a great amount of leg room for older children.

We awarded the Axkid Minikid 5 stars!

Belt Fitment

This seat is fitted using the 3 point vehicle seatbelt,  support leg and rear tethers that attach to the front vehicle.

Seat Belt Guides: The seat belt fits through two lap belt guides, which help sit the seat belt under the fabric and child’s legs, near the buckle.  This means it’s a great option if you have short seat belts in your car and are struggling to find a rear facing seat for your toddler.  The guides are well marked and easy to access.

Support Leg: The support leg has a strap which is taught when the leg is pulled forward to the correct angle.  There is no indicator on the support leg to show it is fitted to the floor correctly, however the leg does click audibly when locked into position.

Tether fitting:  The rear tethers on this seat are self-adjusting, which not only reduces the risk of misuse, but it also takes away the doubt of whether or not you’ve got the tethers tight enough.  Once you have attached them, you rock the seat back and forth and the tethers ratchet back into the seat, going nice and tight!

Instructions

The instructions are pictorial and text, there are also fitting video’s available on the Axkid website.  Although there is no guidance on when to remove the infant padding.

Extra Features

Self adjusting headrest:  The headrest will adjust to the correct height when you pull the harness tight to your child.

Self adjusting tethers: The tethers are really easy to tighten, as you simply rock the seat gently side to side and they ratchet back into the seat.

ASIP®:  The Axkid Minikid also includes, what they refer to as ASIP (Additional Side Impact Protection)  You slide the provided foam pad onto the side of the seat nearest the vehicle door, and this helps to absorbs energy in a side impact.

Harness

Harness Use:The harness is well designed and not likely to twist with regular use– this is good news for parents, as a twisted harness can be tricky to sort out.  The button to extend the harness is easy to access and the straps adjust freely.  The button to extend the harness is clear and easy to operate, and the straps move freely.

The harness itself is easy to adjust the height on – it is automatic!  Starting with the headrest in the highest position, you place your child in the seat and do the harness up as normal.  Next, you pull the harness tight, and the headrest automatically comes down to the correct height, with the straps achieving the correct tension.  This is a great feature as it self adjusts as the child grows and means you’ll always mention the harness correctly.

You can lock the headrest into a fixed position if the self-adjustment doesn’t work for you, this is done by sliding the grey toggle across.
